UK Certificate of Origin

A Certificate of Origin is an important international trade document that certifies that goods in a particular export shipment are wholly obtained, produced, manufactured or processed in a particular country. It also serves as a declaration by the exporter.

What is a Certificate of Origin (CO)
A CO is an official document that certifies the country where goods in a shipment were produced, manufactured, or processed.
Why do I need a Certificate of Origin?
Many countries require it for customs clearance, tariff benefits, and to comply with trade agreements. Without a CO, your shipment may face delays or higher duties.
Who issues the Certificate of Origin?
The West Somerset Chamber of Commerce issues COs for goods exported to the UK and beyond. Each certificate is verified, stamped, and assigned a unique serial number or QR code.
How do I apply for a Certificate of Origin?
You can apply online through our website by submitting the commercial invoice, packing list, and proof of origin. Our team reviews the documents before issuing the CO.
How can I verify a Certificate of Origin?
Simply visit our website, enter the serial number (SN) or scan the QR code printed on the CO. The system will confirm its authenticity and details.
How long does it take to get a CO?
Most certificates are processed and issued within 1–2 business days once complete documentation is provided.
What information is included in a CO?
Exporter details, consignee details, description of goods, tariff code, country of origin, and official Chamber certification.
Is there a fee for obtaining a CO?
Yes, a small fee applies for each certificate. Reduced rates may be available for Chamber members.
Can you assist with other export documents?
Yes. In addition to COs, we can guide you on related trade documents.

Customs Declaration

A Customs Declaration is a mandatory document submitted to customs authorities whenever goods are imported or exported. It provides detailed information about the shipment, including:

  • The exporter and importer details
  • A description of the goods
  • Commodity (HS) codes
  • Quantity, weight, and value
  • The country of origin and destination
  • Applicable duties, taxes, or tariffs

Customs authorities use this information to:

  • Assess and collect the correct duties and taxes
  • Ensure the goods comply with trade laws and safety regulations
  • Monitor trade statistics and cross-border movement

Submitting accurate customs declarations is essential for avoiding shipment delays, penalties, or rejected entries. Businesses are advised to prepare documentation carefully and, when necessary, work with a Chamber of Commerce or a licensed customs agent to ensure compliance.

Certificate Verification

Our Certificate Verification service provides a secure and reliable way to confirm the authenticity of trade documents issued through the Chamber. Each Certificate of Origin carries a unique serial or QR code, allowing importers, exporters, and customs authorities to verify its validity in real time. This ensures smooth clearance at borders, reduces the risk of fraud, and builds trust between trading partners.
